Nicaragua

Tucked in between Honduras and Costa Rica we find Nicaragua, a country generally known only for the war between the Sandonistas and Contra’s. That all ended in 1987 and Nicaragua is now one of the safest countries in Central America. It is still not a major tourist destination, but ask anybody who is a keen surfer and they will immediately tell you
that Nicaragua has the best surf in the world because of the off-shore winds.

We spend almost two weeks in Nicargua, starting off on Big Corn Island located 70km east of the Caribbean coast. They speak Caribbean English, unlike the rest of the country where only Spanish is spoken. Originally A haven for pirates and buccaneers in the 17th century, untold numbers of shipwrecks and treasures still lay scattered along the turquoise shores of The Corn Islands. The main industry is fishing and this is reflected in the menu pricing – A whole lobster plus a beer for $10.00.

Granada
Our next stop was Granada, which is inland and on the shores of Lake Nicaragua.

The city is known for its architectural heritage with colourful Cathedral of Granada dating to 1583. The Centro Cultural Convento San Francisco nearby is famed for its displays of pre-Columbian statues. Granada boasts some excellent restaurants.

Nicaragua can definitely be classed as a poor country. Average daily wages are less than $10.00 per day. There is very little sign of wealth or opulence. Until we arrived at Mukul Resort on the Pacific Coast. This is a 6 star resort which compares favourably with any other in the world.

It is owned by the famous Carlos Pellas who amongst other interests also own the famous brand of rum – Fleur de Canja. We discovered that good rum is similar to good whisky. It is aged in oak and a good 18 year old is smooth and easy to sip like scotch. Other guests included Adam Scott (pro golfer) who chose to spend most of his time surfing the waves which can only be accessed by land by residents of the resort.

Our last week was spent at a villa we rented at Plaja Maderas. This is a surfing village located 10km north of San Juan Del Sur. For the princely sum of $150.00 per day we enjoyed a 3 bedroom villa with private pool overlooking the ocean, Yes, that’s us in the picture.

We bought food in the local supermarket. Four days food and drinks for 4 people costs about $100.00.

If you are looking for diversity, Nicaragua is the place for you. I’d love to help you plan your trip.
